The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has expressed deep sorrow following the tragic death of Berekum Chelsea player Dominic Frimpong, who is believed to have died during a reported armed robbery attack on the Bibiani–Goaso road.
The unfortunate incident reportedly occurred as the team was returning from a Ghana Premier League match, leaving the football community in shock and mourning.
In a statement released on April 13, the GFA said it was “deeply saddened and profoundly shocked” by the news of the young player’s passing.
“The Ghana Football Association has received with profound shock and deep sorrow the tragic news of the passing of Dominic Frimpong of Berekum Chelsea Football Club,” the statement said.
The association extended its condolences to the bereaved family, teammates, and the entire Berekum Chelsea setup, describing the loss as a painful blow to Ghana football.
“The GFA extends its heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, his teammates, technical staff, management, and all at Berekum Chelsea during this extremely difficult time,” it added.
The 20-year-old midfielder was described as a promising talent whose dedication to the game reflected the spirit of the Ghana Premier League.
The GFA further confirmed it is in close contact with the club and security agencies, including the Ghana Police Service, to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure justice is served.
It also announced plans to engage key stakeholders to review security arrangements for teams travelling for league matches, aimed at preventing similar tragedies in the future.
The entire Ghana football fraternity continues to mourn the loss, with many calling for improved safety measures for clubs on away fixtures.
