Ghana and Algeria Strengthen Historic Ties with Visa Waiver and New Strategic Partnerships

Ghana and Algeria have taken a major step toward deepening their long-standing relationship with the signing of a visa waiver agreement in Accra on Thursday, May 1. The announcement was made by Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, following a successful official visit to Algiers.

In a Facebook post, Mr. Ablakwa described the visit as “exceedingly successful,” highlighting several important agreements reached between the two nations. Key among them was Algeria’s commitment to increase scholarship opportunities for Ghanaian students, particularly in forward-looking fields such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and engineering.

The two countries also agreed to work toward establishing a direct flight route between Accra and Algiers, a move expected to enhance connectivity and economic cooperation.

Additionally, Ghana and Algeria are set to launch a strategic partnership in oil and gas, alongside efforts to strengthen security cooperation and intelligence sharing. The revival of their Joint Economic Cooperation framework marks yet another significant milestone in the growing bilateral relationship.

Mr. Ablakwa underscored the deep historical connection between the two countries, noting that Ghana was the first place outside Algeria where the Algerian flag and national anthem were unveiled during the early 1960s, a powerful symbol of solidarity during Algeria’s independence struggle.

He expressed his sincere gratitude to Algerian President H.E. Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Foreign Minister H.E. Ahmed Attaf for their warm hospitality and genuine friendship. Ablakwa emphasized that the shared history and mutual respect between Ghana and Algeria continue to pave the way for stronger collaboration in the years ahead.
