Ghana Evacuates Citizens from Iran Over Rising Israel-Iran Tensions

The Government of Ghana has begun the immediate evacuation of its citizens from Iran following the recent escalation of conflict between Israel and Iran.

Announcing the decision today, Monday, June 16, on his X page, Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa stated that the move is aimed at ensuring the safety of Ghanaian lives as tensions rise in the region. “The Mahama Administration has, in the interest of the protection of Ghanaian lives, decided to immediately evacuate Ghanaians living in Iran,” he said.

As part of the evacuation, Ghana’s embassy in Tehran has been shut down with immediate effect. “To guarantee the safety of our embassy staff, Ghana’s embassy in Tehran has been closed with immediate effect,” Ablakwa added. The evacuation exercise covers all Ghanaian diplomats, students, professionals, and other citizens, and is being carried out through land borders.

The government also indicated that it is closely monitoring the situation in Israel. While no evacuation has been announced for now, operations at Ghana’s embassy in Tel Aviv have been scaled down. “In the interim, we have instructed that embassy operations in Tel Aviv be reduced to the barest minimum, and all Ghanaians in Israel must maintain close communication with our consular department,” Ablakwa noted.

He further assured that “no effort would be spared in protecting Ghanaian lives and keeping all Ghanaians out of harm’s way.”

The government called on both Israel and Iran to prioritize dialogue and de-escalation. “The Government of Ghana reiterates its demand on both parties to pursue diplomatic options and end hostilities,” the statement concluded.
