President John Dramani Mahama says the government will sign a contract for a state-owned 1,200-megawatt (MW) gas-fired thermal power plant.
Speaking at a town hall meeting with the Ghanaian community in New York, President Mahama said the project would significantly expand the country’s thermal power generation capacity.
“We are going to build the biggest thermal capacity in Ghana. Before the end of this year, we’re going to sign 1,200 megawatts of gas thermal power,” he said.
President Mahama also indicated that the project would be financed with Ghana’s own resources rather than through new borrowing.
His comments come amid discussions with independent power producers (IPPs) over Ghana’s power supply and the need to strengthen the country’s generation capacity.
He said the government had decided to pursue the new thermal capacity rather than rely solely on additional power offers from IPPs.
“We’re not borrowing a dime to do it. We’re doing it with our own money. We’re paying for it with our own money,” President Mahama said.
