The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has warned that a very strong El Niño developing in the Pacific Ocean could significantly influence Ghana’s weather conditions into the first half of 2027, bringing hotter temperatures, prolonged dry spells and increased dust levels.
According to the Agency, Ghana is likely to experience a hotter, drier and dustier dry season from late November 2026. However, parts of the country, particularly southern Ghana, could still experience sudden heavy rainfall and flooding.
The warning highlights the possibility of unusual weather patterns, with periods of prolonged dryness occurring alongside episodes of intense rainfall.
GMet noted that Ghana’s experience with previous El Niño events, particularly the very strong episodes of 1982/83, 1997/98 and 2015/16, as well as the moderate 2023/24 event, demonstrates the country’s vulnerability to changes in rainfall patterns.
Such weather variations can have significant consequences for agriculture, water resources, hydroelectric power generation, and public health, underscoring the importance of preparedness as the country approaches the 2026/2027 dry season.
