GPRTU Announces 8% Transport Fare Increase Effective September 26

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has agreed to increase transport fares by 8%, with the new fares taking effect from Saturday, September 26, 2026.

The decision follows a meeting between the GPRTU and the Ministry of Transport on Tuesday, September 22, to discuss the proposed adjustment.

Speaking on TV3’s Ghana Tonight, the Deputy Public Relations Officer of the GPRTU, Samuel Amoah, said the Union initially pushed for a 30% increase due to the rising cost of operating commercial vehicles.

He explained that the Union was reluctant to accept any adjustment below 30%, but discussions with the Ministry eventually led to a compromise.

“We were pushing for 30% and not coming down. But then during the meeting, the Minister also came in that the President has given some directive and that hopefully we will have some more reduction on petroleum products,” Mr Amoah said.

According to him, there were also discussions about maintaining the existing fares. However, the GPRTU maintained that some increase was necessary to support drivers and transport operators.

“Initially, they were even talking about us not going ahead to increase at all, but we were also saying that for us to go back not getting any increment for our drivers will be bad for our business,” he said.

After further discussions, both sides agreed on an 8% increase in transport fares.

“We jaw-jaw, and at the close of the meeting, we all came up with an agreement that we will come up with an 8% increment which will take effect on Saturday, September 26,” Mr Amoah added.

The GPRTU is now working on the specific fare adjustments and will circulate the details to its members ahead of the implementation date.

Mr Amoah said the Union wants to ensure that all drivers and operators receive the necessary information before the new fares take effect.
