“I Want to Start with God and End with God,” Dr Bryan Acheampong Declares Intent to Run for NPP Flagbearer

Abetifi Member of Parliament and former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has officially declared his intention to contest the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearership, placing his trust in God as he embarks on what he described as a “treacherous political journey.”

Speaking after fellowship with the Presbyterian Church today, Tuesday, June 24, Dr. Acheampong said it was important for him to start this political ambition in the presence of the church and seek divine blessings before making any formal announcement.

“Thank you very much. I am a product of the church,” he humbly stated. “Before a formal announcement is made, I thought it wise to come and inform the General Council and the Moderator of the Presbyterian Church that this is what I have set out to do.”

Dr. Acheampong revealed that he had set up an exploratory committee about a month ago to assess whether his vision aligned with what both the party and the Ghanaian people were looking for in a future leader. “A week ago, we got together and reviewed the report. It largely aligned with what I set out to do,” he noted.

The committee’s findings, according to him, pointed to the need for a new type of leadership within the NPP. “The report suggested there was a need to have a different candidate that can galvanize the party, unite the party, create jobs, provide security, and revamp the infrastructure of this country,” he explained.

However, Dr. Acheampong was quick to clarify that the committee did not explicitly endorse his candidacy. “They did not give me the green light to contest. What they did was make suggestions about what the party was looking for and what Ghanaians are aspiring to,” he said. “And I think I fit the bill.”

The Abetifi MP said after carefully weighing the expectations of the party and the country, he felt ready to take up the challenge. “It’s something I weighed myself, and I feel I will be able to do,” he confidently added.

Most importantly, Dr. Acheampong stressed the central role of faith in his journey. “I want to start with God and then finish with God,” he said. “You know how treacherous the political journey can be. God is a requirement for a journey like this, and it is important to seek the church and God’s blessing in prayer.”

He assured that his political journey would be grounded in continuous prayer, believing that spiritual direction is essential to the road ahead.

Dr. Acheampong is expected to make his formal announcement in the coming days as he joins the growing list of hopefuls vying for the NPP leadership ahead of the party’s next major elections.
