Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon Mahama Ayariga, says he believes there is nothing wrong with Ghana having a National Cathedral, despite the controversy surrounding the abandoned project.
Speaking during a meeting with the leadership of the Christian Council of Ghana, the minister said his concerns have always centred on the location chosen for the project rather than the idea of constructing a National Cathedral.
“I honestly, sincerely think that there’s nothing wrong with having a National Cathedral. It is my honest belief that there’s nothing wrong with having a National Cathedral,” Hon Ayariga stated.
He acknowledged that there has been public debate over whether the project was sited at the right location.
“At the time that the initiative started, I was part of the Minority in Parliament that really felt that it wasn’t the right location,” he said.
According to him, he was particularly opposed to demolishing the residences of judges to make way for the project.
“I sincerely thought it wasn’t the right thing to demolish all the houses of the judges,” Hon Ayariga said, noting that the area housed senior members of the judiciary, including Supreme Court and Court of Appeal judges.
