NPP Bows Out of Tamale Central By-Election in Honour of Late MP Dr. Murtala Mohammed.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced that it will not contest the upcoming Tamale Central Parliamentary by-election following the death of the constituency’s MP, Alhaji Hon. Dr. Murtala Mohammed, in the August 6 military helicopter crash.

The decision, taken at a National Steering Committee meeting on Monday, August 11, 2025, was guided by what party leaders describe as “a matter of conscience” and respect for national unity in a time of grief.

Dr. Murtala Mohammed was one of eight people who lost their lives in service to the nation during the tragic crash. The NPP leadership says it considered the “circumstances under which the Tamale Central seat has become vacant” and concluded that participating in a highly competitive political process now could deepen divisions.

According to the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, “It would be inhumane and unconscionable to subject the nation to a competitive process in search of a replacement for the departed MP.”

The NPP further stressed that by-elections in Ghana often come with tension and acrimony, something they believe should be avoided during this period of national mourning. Instead, the party is urging the country to focus on paying a more fitting tribute, one that includes unity and determination to solve pressing national challenges.

“The greatest tribute that the NPP and the rest of the nation can pay in honour of the departed is not only to win the fight against galamsey but also to ensure a smooth and peaceful replacement for the good people of Tamale Central,” the party stated.

The Electoral Commission is expected to open nominations for the by-election soon under Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution. When it does, the NPP says it will, “in accord with the national interest,” stay out of the contest.
