Supreme Court Set for Renewal as President Nominates Seven Eminent Justices

Ghana’s judiciary is set for a major shake-up following the President’s nomination of seven Justices of the Court of Appeal to the Supreme Court, in line with Article 144(2) of the 1992 Constitution. This move comes at a critical moment, coinciding with the suspension of the current Chief Justice, and signals a renewed focus on strengthening the judiciary’s capacity and credibility.

The nominees are a distinguished group of legal minds known for their service, integrity, and depth of experience. Among them is Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei, renowned for his work in legal education and judicial training. Also nominated is Justice Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh, known for his fairness and strong constitutional knowledge, and Justice Senyo Dzamefe, who chaired the high-profile football governance inquiry.

Justice Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo, Justice Philip Bright Mensah, and Justice Janapare Bartels-Kodwo bring extensive appellate experience, while Justice Hafisata Amaleboba, a vocal advocate for gender equity, adds critical representation to the list.

The President has urged the Council of State to expedite its review process, with the nominees’ CVs already submitted for consideration.this came amidst of the suspension of the current chief justice.If approved by Parliament, these appointments will bring fresh perspectives, enhance judicial diversity, and strengthen the Supreme Court’s role in upholding justice and constitutional governance
