Whether You Voted for Me or Not, We Are All Ghanaians” — President Mahama Calls for Unity in New Year Message

President John Mahama has urged Ghanaians to put aside political divisions and work together for national progress as the country enters 2026.

Delivering his New Year message on January 1, he emphasised that nation-building requires unity, shared purpose, and a renewed commitment to Ghana’s collective future.

President Mahama reminded citizens that the country’s identity goes beyond political party lines. “Whether you voted for me or not, whether you supported the NDC or not, we are all Ghanaians,” he stated, adding that “there is no NPP Ghana… no CPP Ghana or NDC Ghana. There is only one Ghana, the one our forebears fought for and shed their blood to give us our freedom.”

Calling for tolerance in political discourse, he appealed to citizens to move away from antagonism and conflict. He encouraged healthy debate grounded in respect, saying, “Let us disagree without being disagreeable, let us compete in the marketplace of ideas without treating our opponents as enemies.”

The President also shared a hopeful vision for the nation’s future, one rooted in opportunity, fairness, and dignity. He spoke of a Ghana where every child can aspire and succeed, where hard work is rewarded, and where integrity is upheld. He expressed hope for a country where “our young people don’t have to risk their lives crossing the Sahara or the Mediterranean in search of opportunities because opportunities abound right here at home.”

He further envisioned a nation admired globally for its democracy and resilience, declaring, “I see a Ghana that is a light unto Africa and a beacon unto the world.”

President Mahama stressed that this vision is achievable through collective effort rather than wishful thinking. As he put it, “This is the Ghana we are building together, the Ghana that is within our reach.” He urged citizens to step into the new year with “confidence, determination, and faith in God, faith in Ghana, and faith in ourselves.”

He concluded by encouraging Ghanaians to strengthen the foundations already laid and strive toward greater achievements in the coming year.
