Passengers using the Accra International Airport will soon experience faster and more convenient security checks following the introduction of new state-of-the-art screening equipment by the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL).
The new technology, deployed at the passenger screening checkpoints of Terminals 2 and 3, is aimed at strengthening aviation security while reducing delays and improving the overall travel experience.
Under the upgraded system, passengers will no longer be required to remove laptops and other large electronic devices from their hand luggage during screening.
GACL explained that “laptops and other large electronic devices can now remain in your cabin baggage during screening,” allowing travellers to move through checkpoints more smoothly.
The new equipment will also end the routine removal of shoes and belts for most passengers. According to the airport authorities, “passengers may proceed through screening with footwear and belts on,” except where additional checks are required during security profiling.
Another major change is the handling of liquids, aerosols and gels (LAGs). Passengers will now be allowed to keep these items in their cabin baggage during screening, as separate screening may no longer be necessary under the new process.
However, GACL reminded travellers that existing aviation security rules remain in force, including the restriction on liquids exceeding 100ml per container.
The upgrade also introduces an Automatic Tray Return System, which will improve the speed of passenger movement by quickly returning trays after screening, allowing travellers to repack their belongings faster.
GACL said the transition to the new system will be implemented gradually, with the new equipment operating alongside existing screening procedures during the migration period.
The company has urged passengers and airport stakeholders to cooperate as the new technology is rolled out, describing the move as part of ongoing efforts to modernise airport operations and enhance security standards at Ghana’s main international airport.
