The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced plans to begin a nationwide meter audit exercise across all its operational areas to reduce commercial losses, improve revenue collection and clamp down on electricity theft.
The exercise will cover prepaid and postpaid meters, Special Load Tariff (SLT) installations and associated wiring to ensure that metering systems are functioning properly and electricity consumption is accurately measured and billed.
In a notice to the public, ECG said the announcement serves as official notice of the exercise, adding that no separate notification letters, appointment letters or further advance notices would be issued.
The company has therefore urged customers, landlords, estate managers, property managers, facility managers and security personnel to cooperate with authorised ECG personnel and avoid denying or delaying them access to premises because no individual notification has been received.
ECG cited Regulation 4(h) of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (Customer Service) Regulations, 2020 (L.I. 2413), which requires consumers to grant utility employees or authorised agents safe and reasonable access to their premises to read meters or inspect utility equipment, subject to the presentation of verifiable identification and compliance with the utility’s customer charter.
The company stressed that all employees and authorised agents participating in the exercise would carry official ECG identification cards.
However, the company has urged the public to verify the identity of field personnel before allowing them onto their premises. To help with identity verification of ECG staff, the Company provided service number 0302 611 611 and a USSD code *226#. The company also encourage the public to cooperate with the exercise to help reduce electricity losses.
