Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced plans to resume spillage at the Weija Dam from Wednesday, September 9, 2026, following a rise in the dam’s water level.
According to GWL, the water level has reached 45.2 feet, driven by heavy upstream rainfall and ongoing rainfall within the Densu River catchment area and its tributaries.
The company said the level is now approaching the 46-foot safety threshold, prompting the decision to release excess water as a precautionary measure to protect the dam.
“GWL will resume spillage from Wednesday, 9 September 2026, as a precautionary measure to safeguard the dam,” the company said.
As a result, residents living downstream of the dam have been directed to evacuate their homes and other vulnerable areas ahead of the spillage.
“All residents living downstream of the Weija Dam are to evacuate the area before any eventuality,” GWL warned, urging residents to remain alert and comply with official evacuation directives.
Communities identified as potentially affected include Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach and Ada Kopey, as well as surrounding areas.
GWL has also called on the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), District Assembly, traditional authorities, Assembly Members, residents’ associations and other relevant stakeholders to take precautionary measures and prepare for a possible evacuation.
The company said it is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to provide updates as conditions develop.
“The safety of residents is still our priority, and public cooperation is essential,” GWL stated.
