Bawumia Blames Arrogance, Bad Policies, and Disunity for NPP’s 2024 Election Lose

Former Vice President and 2024 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has openly reflected on the reasons behind the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general elections, citing arrogance of power, unpopular economic policies, and internal divisions.

Speaking at the launch of his nationwide Thank You Tour at the Takoradi Technical University auditorium on Saturday, April 26, 2025, Dr. Bawumia addressed claims that he alone caused the party’s loss.

“When you study all the reports we have so far, certain factors were highlighted. These include the high cost of living; the prices of goods and services went up and left many Ghanaians struggling. Another factor that was highlighted is the arrogance of power  we were not willing to listen,” he admitted.

Dr. Bawumia pointed to the party leadership’s disregard for grassroots concerns, such as ignoring calls for a government reshuffle after eight years, pushing forward the controversial E-Levy despite strong opposition, and implementing the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) even after warnings.

He also lamented the government’s inability to fulfill financial obligations to groups like NABCO beneficiaries, youth in afforestation programs, and school caterers, saying it deepened public frustration.

Additionally, Dr. Bawumia acknowledged that the NPP’s failure to effectively campaign in stronghold regions, including the Western Region, and the lack of party unity severely weakened their electoral fortunes.

“So, going into the 2024 general election, the NPP as a party was not fully united. The opposition at the time, the NDC, even though they didn’t have a strong campaign message, managed to use our own words and mistakes against us,” he noted.

He urged party faithful to avoid attacking each other during campaigns, stressing that internal conflict only empowers opponents.
