What appeared to be a major victory for Ghanaian television subscribers has taken an unexpected turn.
On Monday, September 29, 2025, the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Hon Samuel Nartey George, announced that MultiChoice Africa had agreed to an “unprecedented increased value offer” for Ghanaian customers. According to the Minister, beginning October 1, DStv subscribers would automatically receive higher-tier packages at no additional cost, a move he described as the result of weeks of negotiations between the government and Multichoice.
However, on October 1, MultiChoice Ghana released its own statement, and the details paint a slightly different picture. According to the company, what is being rolled out is not a permanent price cut but rather a three-month promotional campaign. Running from October 1 to December 31, 2025, the initiative will see active, new, and reconnected customers upgraded one bouquet higher than the package they pay for.
In practical terms, a Compact subscriber will enjoy Compact Plus for the same fee, while Compact Plus users will access Premium during the promotion window. But from January 2026, subscribers will revert to their original packages unless MultiChoice announces further adjustments.
The clarification has left some Ghanaians questioning whether the government’s announcement overstated the nature of the deal. While the Minister framed the development as a long-term concession achieved through regulatory pressure, MultiChoice’s press release stresses it is “a gesture to give our customers even more value” for a limited period.
As the festive season approaches, the promotion is expected to delight households with extra entertainment at no additional cost. However, for many subscribers, the bigger question remains: will these upgrades continue beyond December, or was this a one-time holiday bonus?
