Fourth Akosombo Power Unit Restored – Energy Minister

The government has announced the successful restoration of a fourth power-generation unit at the Akosombo Dam, as efforts intensify to stabilise Ghana’s electricity supply following the recent fire at the facility.

Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon John Abdulai Jinapor, disclosed the development in a Facebook update on April 28, revealing that the unit was brought back into operation at exactly 9:09 pm.

According to the Minister, the latest restoration came only hours after engineers successfully reactivated the third-generation unit, signalling steady progress in rebuilding lost generation capacity.

Hon Jinapor praised the engineers and technical teams for their commitment and expertise during the recovery process.

“At 9:09 pm, the fourth unit at Akosombo Dam was successfully brought into operation, an encouraging step that strengthens power generation and reflects the dedication and expertise of the team behind the effort,” he stated.

The restoration exercise follows a recent fire at the Akosombo substation, which damaged the control room and caused the loss of more than 1,000 megawatts of power from the national grid.

The incident triggered power supply instability and intermittent outages in several parts of the country, raising concerns over electricity reliability.

Government officials say repair works are continuing, with efforts focused on fully restoring generation capacity and improving stability within the national power system.
