The Ghana Education Service (GES) has issued a directive to all heads of basic schools to immediately cease the collection of unauthorized fees for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and to refund any such fees already collected. This action follows reports that some school heads have been imposing additional charges on final-year students, contrary to GES regulations.
In a press release dated February 12, 2025, the GES emphasized that these unauthorized charges are illegal and must be stopped immediately. Regional Directors have been instructed to alert District Directors to monitor the situation and ensure compliance. School heads who have already collected unauthorized fees are required to refund the money, with non-compliance resulting in sanctions.

The GES also reminded schools that late registration of candidates will not be permitted, urging all eligible students to register within the period set by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC). The statement, signed by Cassandra Twum Ampofo, Head of the Public Relations Unit, advised the general public to take note of the directive.
This directive underscores the GES’s commitment to ensuring that education remains accessible and affordable, and that unauthorized financial burdens are not placed on students and their families.
