Government  to Rename Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport

The government has announced plans to rename Ghana’s main international gateway, Kotoka International Airport (KIA), to Accra International Airport, subject to parliamentary approval.

The announcement was made during a leadership media briefing held ahead of the resumption of the Ninth Parliament on Tuesday, February 3, 2026.

Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business, Hon Mahama Ayariga, disclosed that the proposed name change would be carried out through legislation to be introduced by the Minister for Transport.

“We are changing the name of our airport from Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport. The Minister will bring a bill for Transport for the name to be changed,” Mr Ayariga stated.

According to him, the renaming of the airport forms part of a broader package of legislative priorities the government intends to roll out when Parliament resumes sittings.

Hon Ayariga further revealed that the Minister for Transport is expected to lay several additional bills before the House. These include the Maritime Offences Bill and the Road Traffic Bill, which are aimed at strengthening transport regulation in the country.

He noted that the proposed Road Traffic Bill would also address the legalisation and regulation of commercial motorcycle operations, popularly known as okada.

The upcoming parliamentary session is expected to focus heavily on transport, safety, and regulatory reforms as the government advances its legislative agenda for the year.
