IGP Leads Team to Bawku After Violent Clashes and Arson Attack

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, is leading a team of top officers from operations, investigations, and intelligence to Bawku in the Upper East Region to evaluate the security situation there. This follows a violent clash between the police and local youth, which resulted in the tragic death of Fuseini Iddrisu.

In addition to the fatality, five other individuals, including a police officer and an immigration officer, were injured in the incident and are currently receiving medical treatment.

On April 9, 2025, calm was restored in Bawku through a joint operation involving the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Armed Forces. However, tensions escalated again on Thursday, April 10, when a group of angry youth set fire to the home of the area’s Member of Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, in Wiidi, a suburb of Bawku. The attack began with the youth throwing stones and breaking windows before turning into an arson attack the next morning.

The violence is believed to have been sparked by anger over the alleged police killing of a young man.

In a statement released on April 10, 2025, the Ghana Police Service stated that while in Bawku, the IGP and his team will meet with the family of the deceased, visit those injured in the attack, and reach out to officers who lost property during the violence. The Police also assured the public that they will continue working closely with the Ghana Armed Forces, traditional leaders, community stakeholders, and others to ensure peace and security in Bawku
