Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has reflected on his tenure in office, highlighting several groundbreaking policies and initiatives that have transformed the lives of millions of Ghanaians.
Addressing NPP supporters after submitting his nomination forms at the NPP headquarters in Accra today, August 28, Dr. Bawumia noted that his role as Vice President allowed him to support the President and the government with bold and practical ideas that have left a lasting mark. “I have also had the distinct privilege of serving as vice president and supporting the president and the government in our last administration with ideas that have significantly impacted the lives of millions of our people,” he stated.
According to him, his contributions went beyond theory and were rooted in innovation and implementation. “This is what the streets refer to as being rich in ideas,” he added.
Highlighting some of the initiatives he successfully championed, Dr. Bawumia listed a number of firsts in Africa. These include the Bank of Ghana’s gold purchase programme, the Gold for Oil policy, the mobile money interoperability system, the Ghana digital property address system, and the universal QR code payment system.
He further mentioned the accelerated issuance of the Ghana Card, the no guarantor student loans, NHIS renewal on mobile phones, the Zongo Development Fund, Zipline drone delivery service which is the largest of its kind in the world as well as Agenda 111, one constituency, one ambulance, paperless ports, digitalisation of medical records, rental assistance scheme, and the introduction of electric buses.
“The implementation of these practical policy initiatives has resulted in many people saying that I have been the most effective vice president in Ghana’s history,” Dr. Bawumia said confidently.
His record, particularly in spearheading digitalisation and innovative governance systems, has become a central part of his political identity. Supporters believe these reforms have laid a strong foundation for the country’s modernisation drive, while critics continue to debate their sustainability and long-term impact.
Nevertheless, Dr. Bawumia’s imprint on Ghana’s governance cannot be denied, and as he rightly notes, many continue to describe him as the country’s most impactful Vice President to date.
