Authorities have launched an urgent investigation into a disturbing incident of mass fish mortality at the Tema Shipyard, raising concerns among residents and stakeholders within the fishing and maritime sectors.
In a joint statement, the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), the Fisheries Commission, Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA), and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service confirmed that the incident was first detected on April 6, 2026.
According to the statement, “dead fish were found concentrated within a 50-metre radius of the main unloading ramp,” an unusual occurrence that was initially spotted by security personnel between 5:00 AM and 6:00 AM.
The four institutions responded swiftly, securing the area and deploying a rapid-response team made up of FDA inspectors, police officers, and Tema Port officials. Their immediate focus has been to contain any potential risk and determine the cause of the incident.
Preliminary assessments suggest that there is currently “no evidence of deliberate sabotage or an immediate widespread health emergency.” However, authorities have emphasised that investigations are ongoing and are being treated with urgency.
As part of the investigative process, between 60 and 80 fish samples, along with water samples, have been collected under strict chain-of-custody procedures for laboratory testing. Officials say these tests are critical in identifying any contaminants or environmental factors that may have led to the sudden deaths.
In the meantime, a strong public advisory has been issued to ensure safety and prevent possible health risks. The statement cautioned residents and the general public to “not harvest, purchase, or consume fish or seafood from the Tema Shipyard or adjacent areas until the FDA issues an ‘All-Clear’ notice.”
Authorities further reassured the public that fish sourced from certified cold-chain markets outside the affected zone remains safe, provided it is properly cooked to an internal temperature of at least 63°C.
Residents are also being urged to remain vigilant. Anyone who encounters dead or distressed fish is encouraged to report them immediately to the FDA via its hotline or the nearest office.
Additionally, individuals who may have already consumed fish from the affected area and are experiencing symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, dizziness, or skin irritation have been advised to seek immediate medical attention and inform healthcare providers of possible exposure.
The agencies assured the public that updates will be communicated as new information emerges, urging everyone to rely solely on official sources to avoid misinformation.
