The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced a planned nationwide power outage on Sunday, July 13, due to scheduled maintenance by gas suppliers ENI.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony for the reconstruction of the 161kV Anwomaso to Kumasi transmission line, the Minister stated that the shutdown is necessary to enable ENI to increase gas production.
“This Sunday, ENI would turn off the Avav temporarily to increase gas production to about 270 million standard cubic feet,” he said. “That is good news. It means we are stabilising the power sector.”
The maintenance will result in a temporary interruption of the electricity supply for approximately four to six hours. Mr. Jinapor appealed to the public for understanding, stating that the decision was made after careful technical analysis.
“We are likely to experience some interruption of power. Please bear with us. It is for a good purpose,” he said.
He added that engineers advised against switching to liquid fuels during the short shutdown, as doing so would involve complex technical adjustments.
“We’ve done all the scenarios and analysis. I’ve directed that we do not attempt to run those plants on liquid fuels for that short period because it involves changing nozzles and a lot of work.”
The Minister assured that the government is working to minimise the impact and improve power supply after the exercise. “Once the work is done, we shall stabilise gas supply, increase production, and improve power delivery.”
