NPP Conducts Balloting Ahead 2026 Presidential Primary

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially taken another decisive step toward its much-anticipated Presidential Primary, following the successful completion of the balloting exercise for its presidential hopefuls.

The event, conducted under the supervision of the Presidential Elections Committee of the NPP in collaboration with the Electoral Commission of Ghana, was held to determine the order in which candidates will appear on the ballot come January 31, 2026.

At the end of the exercise, the order in which the presidential aspirants will appear on the ballot was announced as follows: Hon. Ken Ohene Agyapong, Hon. Dr. Bryan Acheampong, H. E. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Hon. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong. This arrangement, though determined by chance, symbolically sets the tone for what many within the party describe as a test of loyalty, renewal, and leadership vision.

This lineup sets the stage for what many observers believe will be one of the most competitive internal elections in the NPP’s recent history.

Among the frontrunners, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the immediate past Vice President, enters the race with a wealth of national recognition and a strong record of governance experience. However, he also faces what some analysts describe as the challenge of overcoming voter fatigue from the NPP’s previous administration, as the party seeks to maintain its grip on power after two consecutive terms in government.

On the other hand, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, the outspoken  former Assin Central MP, is riding on his reputation for authenticity and fearless commentary. His strong grassroots appeal and independent financial backing make him a formidable contender capable of shaking up traditional voting patterns within the party.

Meanwhile, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, former Minister for Food and Agriculture, and Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Minister for Education, are both positioning themselves as reformists within the NPP faces of renewal and innovation who could redefine the party’s image for a new generation of voters. Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, a former General Secretary of the party, adds a layer of experience and institutional memory to the contest, further enriching the competitive field.

In a statement following the exercise, the Presidential Elections Committee expressed its deep gratitude to all aspirants, their representatives, and the officials of the Electoral Commission “for their cooperation.” The Committee further reaffirmed its “unwavering commitment to transparency, fairness, and the highest democratic standards in the conduct of the Presidential primary.”

As the countdown to January 31 begins, political observers are already predicting a heated contest that will not only shape the NPP’s future leadership but could also determine the party’s ability to retain national power in the 2028 general elections.

With the stage now set, the focus shifts from ballot numbers to strategy, messaging, and unity , these three elements that will ultimately decide who carries the NPP’s flag into Ghana’s next political chapter.
