NPP Opens Presidential Nomination Ahead of 2028 Elections.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially begun its search for a presidential candidate to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.

Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Monday, July 29, the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, announced the formal opening of nominations for the presidential primaries, marking a significant step in the NPP’s roadmap toward reclaiming power.

“In line with Article 13 of the New Patriotic Party’s Constitution, I’m happy to announce to you that we are officially opening nominations for our party members who are smart to become presidential candidates of our party for the 2028 elections,” Kodua declared.

The process, which begins today, will run until Thursday, August 28, 2025. According to the party, nomination forms will be available for purchase at the party’s headquarters upon the payment of a non-refundable application fee of GH₵100,000.

Additionally, aspirants must be prepared to pay a non-refundable filing fee of GH₵500,000, also through a banker’s draft issued in favor of the NPP National Headquarters. Beyond these costs, candidates are required to pay a compulsory development fee, the exact amount of which will be determined by the National Council.

The party has scheduled Saturday, January 31, 2026, as the date for the presidential primaries. Aspirants will need to secure support from various key groups within the party, as outlined by Kodua.

“Following Article 13(11) of the Constitution of the NPP and the motion on transitional clauses adopted at the National Annual Delegates Conference on Saturday, July 19,” he explained, “the following delegates shall elect the party’s presidential candidate: all members of the National Council, all voting members of the National Executive Committee, all voting members of the Regional Executive Committees, all former regional executives, and all voting members of the Constituency Executive Committees.”

The announcement signals the beginning of what promises to be a heated internal race as the party prepares to rally behind a new face following President Akufo-Addo’s exit in 2024.
