Prez Mahama Scraps Fuel Allowances for Government Appointees

President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the immediate cancellation of all fuel allowances and fuel allocations to political appointees, as part of new measures to reduce government spending.

The directive, issued today, July 15, forms part of efforts to control public expenditure and redirect funds to critical development sectors. It signals a strong message from the President that government officials must also share in the sacrifices being asked of citizens.

“The President believes that leadership must also bear its part of the sacrifices it is calling on the people to make,” the statement said.

This is the latest in a series of cost-cutting steps by the Mahama administration. Recently, the government reduced the number of ministers and staff at the Presidency and cut out non-essential services, such as satellite TV subscriptions in government offices.

According to Government Communications Minister and Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the move reflects President Mahama’s commitment to responsible governance.

“This action is part of a broader effort to streamline government operations and ensure that public funds are used wisely,” he noted.

The cancellation of fuel benefits for appointees is expected to save the state millions of cedis annually and is seen as a practical step toward fiscal discipline
