Ghana began their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign on a winning note after a dramatic stoppage-time goal from Caleb Yirenkyi secured a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Panama in its Group L opener at BMO Field in Toronto.
The Black Stars left it late, with Yirenkyi striking in the fifth minute of added time to hand Ghana all three points in a contest that appeared destined to end in a goalless draw.
Panama started the brighter of the two sides and nearly took an early lead within two minutes. Cecilio Waterman connected with a low cross inside the penalty area, but Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi reacted sharply, diving to his right to make an important save.
The Central Americans continued to dominate possession throughout much of the first half, enjoying around 65 % of the ball while Ghana struggled with 35% to create meaningful attacking opportunities. The Black Stars failed to register a shot before the break as Panama dictated the tempo and looked the more threatening side.
Panama came close again in the 38th minute when Ati-Zigi punched clear a dangerous cross into the box. The loose ball fell kindly to Jiovany Ramos, but the defender sliced his effort wide from close range, allowing Ghana to escape another scare.
Ghana suffered a setback at halftime when Ati-Zigi was forced off through injury. His replacement, Benjamin Asare, was called upon to steady the defence as the Black Stars searched for a way back into the game.
Despite struggling for long periods, Ghana gradually improved after the break and looked more composed in possession. As the match entered stoppage time, the Black Stars finally found the breakthrough.
A swift attacking move from deep inside Ghana’s half saw Brandon Thomas-Asante surge down the left flank before delivering a precise pass into the penalty area. Yirenkyi timed his run perfectly and guided the ball into the net to spark wild celebrations among the Ghanaian players and supporters.
The late strike sealed a crucial opening victory for Ghana and denied Panama what would have been a valuable result in their World Cup debut campaign.
At the start of the tournament, FIFA ranked England fourth in the world, Croatia 11th, Panama 34th and Ghana 73rd, making the result an important boost for the Black Stars in a highly competitive group.
Ghana will now turn their attention to a heavyweight clash against England on June 23, while Panama will look to bounce back when they face Croatia in their next Group L fixture.
