Baba Jamal Wins Ayawaso East By-Election.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate, Baba Jamal, has won the Ayawaso East by-election held on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, securing the seat for his party.

The by-election was held to fill the vacancy created by the death of the constituency’s Member of Parliament, Mahama Naser Toure, in January. Baba Jamal defeated his main rival, Baba Ali of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and independent candidate Umaru Sanda Muhammed.

Baba Jamal received 10,884 votes, while NPP’s Baba Ali garnered 4,009 votes. Independent candidate Mohammed Umar Sanda secured 1,885 votes, Ibrahim Idrissu had 43 votes, and Kanor David received 104 votes. Out of a total of 17,048 ballots cast, 16,928 were valid, with 120 rejected.

The election results largely aligned with predictions from the research firm Global InfoAnalytics, which had placed the NDC candidate ahead based on constituency surveys. Baba Jamal’s victory reinforces the NDC’s hold on Ayawaso East. It marks his return to Parliament after previously serving as the MP for Akwatia and as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria.

Voter turnout was generally low, but the voting process was peaceful, with electoral officials and security personnel maintaining order across polling centres.

Baba Jamal is expected to be sworn into Parliament soon to continue the legislative work of the late Mahama Naser Toure and represent the people of Ayawaso East.
