The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has announced that Italian oil and gas company ENI will increase its natural gas supply to Ghana by 30 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd) starting Sunday, July 13. This change will raise ENI’s total daily supply to 270 MMscfd, representing a substantial increase in the country’s domestic energy resources.
In a press release issued today, Wednesday, July 9, the Ministry described the move as a strategic intervention to support Ghana’s energy needs and long-term infrastructure goals.
“This strategic upgrade is a key step in bolstering our energy infrastructure and ensuring a reliable energy supply for the nation,” the Ministry stated.
To enable the successful increase, ENI will temporarily suspend gas export operations, a necessary step that will allow adjustments to the gas supply system. The Ministry acknowledged that this measure could temporarily impact gas availability for power generation.
“This temporary measure is essential for optimizing the supply chain,” the statement noted. “Consequently, there will be an impact on the availability of gas for power generation during this period.
However, government officials have taken steps to ease concerns about possible power disruptions. The Ministry states it has already implemented a series of contingency measures, such as closely monitoring power plants and coordinating with relevant agencies to ensure minimal disruption to the electricity supply nationwide.
“The Ministry, in collaboration with key stakeholders in the power sector, has proactively implemented comprehensive measures to mitigate any potential disruptions,” the release stated.
The gas supply upgrade forms part of Ghana’s broader efforts to improve energy sustainability and reduce dependence on imported fuels. Authorities have expressed confidence that this transition will be managed smoothly, with limited impact on consumers.“We remain committed to ensuring a stable and sustainable energy future for all. We appreciate the cooperation and understanding of the public and stakeholders during this period of enhancement,” the Ministry concluded
