The Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, says the government will have the full funding required for the proposed Accra–Kumasi Expressway ready by the end of this year.
According to him, the project could make history as one of the first major infrastructure projects of its scale to secure all its funding before construction begins.
In a post on X, Dr Ato Forson stressed that the government would not rely on borrowing to finance the project.
“By the end of this year, the full funding for the transformational Accra-Kumasi Expressway will be ready,” he said.
He added: “For the avoidance of doubt, not a single pesewa will be borrowed for this project!”
The announcement comes as preparations for the project continue on the ground. The Ghana Armed Forces Engineers have announced that they have cleared 170 kilometres of the 176-kilometre corridor earmarked for the proposed expressway, leaving just six kilometres yet to be cleared.
The Accra–Kumasi Expressway is expected to become a major transport corridor linking Ghana’s two largest cities and is being described by the government as a key infrastructure project.
