Thousands Rally Behind Okatakyie Afrifa, in Ongoing #GalamseyMustfall Protest

In a powerful display of unity and concern for Ghana’s future, thousands of supporters flooded the streets today as media personality and activist Okatakyie Afrifa led the #GalamseyMustfall demonstration. The massive turnout highlights the deep frustration among citizens over the devastating impact illegal mining popularly known as “galamsey” continues to have on Ghana’s lands, water bodies, and communities.

The protest, which remains peaceful, began at Kwame Nkrumah Circle and is currently ongoing. Protesters intend to march to the Flagstaff House, where they will present a petition directly to the President, urging immediate and decisive action to combat illegal mining.

Clad in red and black, demonstrators carried placards bearing bold messages such as “Protect Our Future,” “Stop Galamsey Now,” and “Save Our Water Bodies.” Their chants echoed through the streets, demanding accountability and stronger enforcement of mining laws. The presence of thousands, particularly the vibrant youth who have rallied strongly behind the movement, sends a clear message that Ghanaians will no longer tolerate inaction.

Speaking during the protest, Okatakyie Afrifa passionately decried the irreversible damage being done to Ghana’s environment. He lamented the contamination of rivers, the destruction of fertile lands, and the growing threat to food security. “Our lands are bleeding, our rivers are crying. If we don’t rise now, there will be no Ghana left for our children,” he told the energized crowd.

Okatakyie also pointed out that although it has been four months since the President assumed office, there has yet to be decisive action to tackle the galamsey menace. He urged the President to take a second, more serious look at the situation, stressing that the cost of inaction is far too great.

Beyond the emotional speeches, the demonstration shed light on the severe health and social crises linked to illegal mining. Communities living in galamsey-affected areas are experiencing a surge in serious health issues, including a rise in kidney disease due to polluted water sources, birth defects, and other alarming conditions. Pregnant women, children, and vulnerable groups are among the most severely affected, making the demand for action even more urgent.

As the protest marches on towards the Flagstaff House, the energy and commitment of the demonstrators reflect a growing nationwide movement. The pressure is mounting on the government to enforce stronger, more effective measures to reclaim and protect Ghana’s environment  before it is too late.
