Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz did not hold back after the Black Stars’ spirited 0-0 draw against England at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, aiming at Video Assistant Referee (VAR) officials over what he believes was a game-changing mistake.
The Portuguese tactician expressed frustration after Ghana were denied what he described as a clear penalty and a red card offence during the second half of the Group L encounter at Gillette Stadium.
While praising his players for their disciplined and determined display against one of the tournament favourites, Queiroz suggested the match officials failed to review a crucial incident that could have handed Ghana all three points.
“I’m not sure if VAR is still working in the World Cup. Do we still have VAR? Is it working?” Queiroz asked reporters after the match.
The veteran coach then delivered a sarcastic assessment of the officiating, claiming the video officials were absent when Ghana needed them most.
“Another penalty that they need to give to Ghana, a clear penalty. VAR went for a coffee, and it’s natural. I would like them to also take me for coffee once in a while,” he said.
Queiroz insisted the incident was straightforward and should have resulted in both a penalty kick and a dismissal.
“It was a clear penalty. A clear penalty, a red card. Do you have any doubts about that? You guys who saw the game, do you have any doubts about that?” he questioned.
The Ghana coach acknowledged that his remarks were laced with sarcasm, joking that speaking more directly about refereeing decisions could lead to disciplinary action.
“Sorry for my sarcasm, but if I say this kind of thing seriously, they punish me. So I hope you understand that I am joking,” he added.
Despite his disappointment with the officiating, Queiroz praised the Black Stars for producing one of their most resilient performances of the tournament. Ghana’s well-organised defence successfully contained England’s attacking stars and secured a valuable point that boosts their hopes of reaching the Round of 32.
The draw leaves Ghana with four points from two matches and firmly in contention for qualification ahead of their final group-stage fixture.
