The Electoral Commission (EC) has stepped in to resolve the ongoing electoral dispute in the Ablekuma North Constituency by ordering a partial rerun in 19 polling stations. This decision comes after weeks of deadlock between the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over the validity of the parliamentary election results.
In a statement issued after a follow-up meeting on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, the EC revealed that the positions of both political parties remained unchanged since their last meeting on June 12.
The NDC has insisted that the entire election be rerun in thirty-seven (37) polling stations. Their concern is that “scanned Pink Sheets from 37 Polling Stations, which were used to collate the results, were provided by the NPP.” The opposition party questioned the credibility of using scanned documents, especially since the originals were missing following violent incidents at the collation centre on election day.
On the other hand, the NPP maintained that only results from three (3) outstanding polling stations should be added to the tally. They argued that the scanned Pink Sheets were valid since “the NDC Agents had verified and confirmed the scanned Polling Station results they presented.”
The EC clarified that the core issue is about the scanned Pink Sheets. It reminded the public that several original Pink Sheets for the Ablekuma North election were destroyed when “Political Party supporters besieged our Collation Centre” on December 7, 2024.
After careful review, the EC announced that it would not rerun the election in all the disputed polling stations. “The Commission informed the Political Parties that it would proceed to rerun the election in 19 out of the 37 Polling Stations,” explaining that these particular stations had scanned results that were not verified by the presiding officers in charge.
However, the EC noted that it had successfully obtained presiding officers’ verification for the remaining 18 scanned polling stations. These results, the Commission said, were also approved by agents of both parties, making a rerun in those stations unnecessary.
The rerun has been scheduled for Friday, July 11, 2025.
